After work yesterday, I went over to Lowes to pick up some rock. There’s almost a half a ton of marble chips in that trailer. On the way home, I stuck to the right lane since I was going slower than the rest of the traffic. The load wasn’t that big, but there was no reason to push it in stop-and-go traffic.
A couple of miles down the road I got caught at a light with a motorcycle behind me. When the light turned green, I started accelerating at a pace that would be best described as stately. No heroics here, I’m clearly pulling a load of rock.
Well, I wasn’t accelerating fast enough for Mr. Zippy on his motorcycle, so he switched lanes and got on the gas. No big deal. I’d have done the same. The problem came when he swooped in front of me and got hard on the brakes. Hello!
I guess he didn’t realize that the entrance to his apartment complex was only 1,300 feet past the light. I had to get hard on the brakes to avoid squishing him. It was so close that I couldn’t see his back tire over the hood of the Explorer.
He realized his mistake a little too late and almost didn’t make the turn. I watched as he overshot the entrance a bit and had to backtrack to avoid hitting the center median. It was not what I would call a smooth turn. It makes me wonder if he’s a new rider. If he keeps making mistakes like that, he won’t be a new rider for long. He’ll be a statistic.

It’s amazing how impatient people are. I imagine their antics would have saved them what, twenty seconds? Honestly, it’s not worth it at that point.

“If he keeps making mistakes like that, he won’t be a new rider for long.”
He needs different instincts. Namely to (A) not accelerate past a car going slower than you’d like and (B) if you overshot your turn, just circle the block or whatever, don’t try to be a hero.

Motorcycles are a menace too often. New rider, probably.

Less than that. It certainly wasn’t worth the risk he took.

I wish people would learn (B). Can’t tell you how many near death misses I’ve seen with people missing an exit or turn

Think ahead and circle the block, two skills I’ve been drilling into my kids as they get closer to being drivers. Before we back out of a parking space, I always ask them which exit from the lot is the safest for the direction we need to go. I’ve purposely missed exits from the freeway so they can see that going to the next exit isn’t a big deal.

Pffft. B???? You obviously just put the vehicle in reverse and back up. It’s especially useful when you miss an exit on a highway. Who has time to circle around???
/SARCASM. Please don’t do that

I’ve seen someone doing this once. I was dumbfounded

It’s amazing how many people think that if they’re about to miss an exit or turn they’ll make an incredibly aggressive maneuver or hold up several lanes of traffic to make it. Just go around. It’s not that big of a deal.

Haha +1 parenting points! Actually, make that +3!

Yeah, or people zipping across 3 lanes of traffic on the highway, it’s so dangerous.

Or in extreme cases, actually come to a STOP on the fucking highway!

I used to get stressed as hell driving in the city, until I realized there’s always another exit. If there’s to much traffic and you can get over into the exit lane, the worst thing that will happen is you’ll take the next one and get where you’re goin 5 minutes later.

left lane full stop is best.... they won’t stop to let me take the exit 3 feet ahead of me

once... i wish I only saw this once...
I see it a few times a year.

circling the block.... that could have saved me a boatload of crap when I was 16, insted I slid my explorer into a Dodge Intrepid, which happened to be the 1st car parked in a parkinglot I was trying to enter at far too high of speed

I had a guy in a BMW cut me off and come to a complete stop in the second to left lane to try to make an exit. I nearly got killed
